Research on genre and target audience

Genre research:

The song Last Night is a mix between Pop and R&B and the conventions of this genre include; showing wealth and status through jewellery i.e. watches, chains, cigar ect, another is reflections i.e. singing to mirrors, cut away from narrative to a performance where they're singing to the camera, costume changes are conventional to pop but not so much to R&B another is backing singers and dancers.
To keep to conventions in our video we'll show the characters wealth and status through his outfit, which will be a suit, his jewellery and through props such as cigar. For the reflection part of the convention while he's putting on the suit he well lip-sync some of the song into the mirror and the camera will be over the shoulder, another is if during the video the character can check himself in his reflection. The performance part of the conventions we could have a few other people in suits sometimes appear to be backing singers/backing dancers. When doing costume changes we could have more subtle changes in his costume for example changing ties and having some shots with him with a blazer on and some with only a wast coat on.

Target Audience:

Justin Timberlake is targeting a wide variety of audiences ranging from teens to more elderly. This is done through his use of hi image, the image of Justin nowadays is very classy and smart and because if this his target audience can be very ranged. Because of this in our music video we want to replicate this and present our singer as classy and smartly dressed.

Location Recce

Peter's bedroom:

Outside Grafton:

New Square:

East Road:

Emmanuel Street:

Health a safety risk assessment:
These locations will be suitable as our idea is of our character walking down the street in a urban setting to fit with the song and we think this area of cambridge would be perfect for our idea. For the bedroom scene we chose Peters bedroom for that as could be passed off as a small apartment in which our character will be living.
While filming on location in town we need to be careful of other pedestrians and when tracking the character and walking backwards the camera man needs to be carful of where there going while also watching where they're going.
If we are going to be film in the road at any point we need to be cautious of cars driving in the road.
As for bedroom filming we need to be carful as to not trip over any of the equipment in a confined space.

The Perfomance - JT

The perfomance of the song Last Night  by Justin Timberlake will focus on one central character and his journey throughout the music video, the narrative would be in the lyrics and what is being shown on screen are after what happened (in other words he was dumped and he is currently recovering well). Events such as waking up in bed and proceeding to have breakfast then going outside will be performed by the main character / singer JT. There will be scenes where he will sing lip synched to the song for additional effect, depending on the lyrics and where he is in terms of location at that point in time we will determine at which points he will sing and which points he will not as we want to make this as professional as possible. We will experiment with different types of editing to see which would have the best effect (e.g. a parallel edit could be useful to show one shot of him being perfectly fine eating food, and the other shot showing that his mind is elsewhere.

Digi-pak and magazine ideas

Justin Timberlake magazine Ad examples:

Magazine Ad ideas: We will probably go for the look of the ad being in black and white as this seems to be a running convention for his adverts. as the music video will consist of him walking down the street we could use a long shot of him facing down the street maybe silhouetted out.

Digi Pack examples :

Shared job

Location:
For location the beginning of the video will be film in Peter's bedroom as the opening scene is of the character getting out of bed and putting on a suit. The remainder of the video will be shot in town with the character walking around lip syncing the lyrics.

Performance:
For performance it will consist of our character walking through town lip syncing to the song.

Props: For this performance we will use various props to show wealth and class that the performer shall be associated with Eg. Cigars, watches and maybe jewelry for the scenes of him walking down the street. then for the start of the video we will use such props as empty beer cans and general mess around the place he wakes up to be contrapuntal to the rest of the video.

Casting: for the performance Peter volunteered as the main performer and we may get other males dressed in suits to do the backing vocals.

Effects:
In terms of effects we could incorperate several editing techniques such as parallel editing and filters (the filters would be used to create a classy black and white effect which would enforce the artists inage).

Overall Vision:
For the overall vision, the video is basically JT waking up the next day after getting dumped and instead of feeling sorry for himself he suits up, go's out into the world an inadvertedly helps others.

Music Video Pitch Feedback

From the feedback we received we realised that having one singer isn't very practical as there are 4 members of Little Mix so from that we could have multiple singers, one idea is having the main character walking past the singing group and the camera switching focus from the main character to the singers.

We also need to film multiple shots of everything to make sure we have a variety in the video.

From our pitch we have decided to change the focus song to Justin Timberlake - Last Night as we think it would be easier for use to produce a decent music video.

How a stars image develops over time.

  • Intro

Rage Against the Machine, also known as RATM, is an American rap metal band from Los AngelesCalifornia. Formed in 1991, the group consists of rapper/vocalist Zack de la Rocha, bassist and backing vocalist Tim Commerford, guitarist Tom Morello and drummer Brad WilkRage Against the Machine is best known for its leftist political views, which are expressed in many of its songs. As of 2010, they have sold over 16 million records worldwide. Their genres include Rap metal, funk metalalternative metal

  • Early star image
Since they started out RATM have been widely know as a politically motivated band who protest against the capitalist ways and are known to have left wing views. this is shown in their first music video as they throw money into the crowd near the beginning of the video and is shot with a low budget cameras. also the same with their next video but they are not infront of a crowd and is more like a music video.

  • Star Image Development
They shown constantly performing and all their videos have a protest element to it, This is shown in the Sleep Now In The Fire where The shoot for the music video on January 26, 1999, caused the doors of the New York Stock Exchange to be closed. In fact, the Stock Exchange locked its doors mid-day in response to fears of crowds gathering to watch the filming, and as result they were escorted from the site by security. Also in their People of the Sun video which is raising awareness of violence in mexico. Their clothes and hair dont really change throughout the videos Zack de la Rocha has his dreaded hair which is  and Tom Morello's cap are the signature clothes/ hair they have.

Analysis of 3 different music videos

1. Linkin Park - Numb - Rock
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sk2BPP49GgI

The lighting in the video and colour scheme are dark and de-saturated making the video seem very gloomy as the video links to a dark theme of being alone.

The setting of the narrative story is a high school which represents the target audience of teenagers and the high school looks very gloomy and plain. When the band are playing the location switches to a church/cathedral setting which is quite a dark setting.

The costumes are pretty dim/plain for the high school students adding to the whole plain dull feeling that you get from the rest of the video. The band ware wearing nothing that makes them stand out and could be considered dull as well.

2. PSY - GENTLEMAN - J-Pop
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASO_zypdnsQ&list=TLKZ8K0U7wj8g

The lighting in the is very bright and uses colours that stand out, for example the pink is PSY suit and the uniforms of the kids playing football.

The setting is all over the place for this song, as it jumps all over the city. The main setting of the video is a swimming pool/gym.

PSY changes suits in almost every shot which is a convention of pop and the girls aren't wearing a lot of clothes.

3. Daft Punk - Around the World - Disco House
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s9MszVE7aR4

The lighting is pretty dim in the video however it's quite colourful. The dancers are wearing very weird costumes, some are wearing toilet paper, some are dressed as spacemen, some are dressed as skeletons.

The whole performance takes place in one room and it's got a slight disco feel to it with the lights in the background keep changing to different colours.

Pitch expansion

Location:

For the video we were thinking of a urban setting, so we are looking to film at Parkers Piece and the areas in the centre of Cambridge as it is public and easy to access for us all.

Performance Style:

For our video the performance will be mostly be a narrative of two people going through a break up and showing how they are dealing with it and hiding the pain. one of the characters will be female and will be the singer in the video. the singing will be done in a way that she will be singing during parts of the narrative and will have other shots when she is separate from everyone else.

Props:

Sunglasses for the main character, costumes for the characters and an umbrella.

Casting:

For the main guy in the video will be Peter and for the girl we still need to find someone. For the extras will will just get a few friends to help out.

Effects:

For the effects we could incorporate a green screen into the video to make one of the characters separate from the rest of the video.

Overall vision:

Overall the video is basically a story of two people who have broken up and it shows them dealing with the break up, in the end they get back together and it will be a happy ending.

Pretend it's OK - Music video pitch plan

"Pretend It's OK"

What would you do? What would you say?
How does it feel? Pretend it's OK
My eyes deceive me, but it's still the same
Pretend it's OK

I remember the day when we rowed all night
I wish that I could get the day back and tell you it's alright
Cause we all do the same thing, we just don't realize
That we're living on borrowed time

What would you do? What would you say?
How does it feel? Pretend it's OK
My eyes deceive me, but it's still the same
Pretend it's OK

I see the light that I'm chasing
A memory, but it's fading
When it's gone I'll be waiting
Knowing it's too late (knowing it's too late)
You chose the road that I'm walking
Now it's your soul that I'm caught in
And you're not hearing when I'm calling
Calling your name

One breath, one step, one life, one heart
Two words, two eyes, new beginning, new start
Too weak, too narrow, too short, too bright,
I'm better with you, here by my side

What would you do? What would you say?
How does it feel? Pretend it's OK
My eyes deceive me, but it's still the same
Pretend it's OK

Nothing here, no one talking, knowing it's too late
But sometimes it can get so hard pretending it's OK
Nothing here, no one talking, nothing's gonna change
But sometimes it can get so hard pretending it's OK

What would you do? (what would you do?)
What would you say? (what would you say?)
How does it feel? Pretend it's OK
My eyes deceive me, but it's still the same
Pretend it's OK

What would you do? (what would you do?)
What would you say? (what would you say?)
How does it feel? Pretend it's OK
My eyes deceive me, but it's still the same
Pretend it's OK

Victor & Michael

Little Mix - Pretend it's OK - Genre codes and conventions

Conventions of dance-pop:

  • Artists wear modern, stylish clothing.
  • Artists usually very happy an content with life.
  • Music is often about love or relationships.
  • Often groups show the unity associated with teens, the primary target for this genre.
  • Music videos usually show the pop culture through the song, but also the setting.
  • Music is usually up beat
We will apply these conventions to our video by having the characters in the video wear stylish modern clothing, making sure the characters are happy by the end of the video, music is about love or relationships and this will be shown through our video, the video will focus of teens as the primary target audience and the characters featured in the video, the video will show pop culture showing teens hanging out in public in a popular spot in town.

Music Video Pitch

The performance -

The performance will mainly be a narrative based will occasional cuts to the singer performing. The character will be amongst friends and everything will seem okay, they'll be laughing and having a good time but it will frequently cut to a opposite scene where their on their own and in darkness. There will also be scenes where the character is with their partner and it fades to them on their own. The narrative will follow two characters, the singer who is a girl and has just broken up with a guy and the other character will be that guy, there both gonna be hurting and we will parallel edit between the two showing how there both hurt and missing each other.

Representation -

The artist and the main guy will be wearing casual mainstream everyday clothing, this representation will make them seem trendy and appeal to teenage audiences as the lyrics of the song relate to many people.

The relationship between the lyrics and visuals -

The visuals will have a strong relationship between the lyrics by having shots of what the lyrics are about eg. when the lyrics 'My eyes deceive me' come up we will have a close up of the singer/character looking at the camera as an example. The song has a reference to break ups so we thought that the narrative will be about a break up between two people.

Media HW - Analysing 3 Different Music Videos

Indie Rock – Gorillaz – Clint Eastwood

The lighting in the video was relatively dark (excluding the start of the video where the Gorillaz are in a white area), this reflects the lyrics as they can be interpreted as dark and literal.

-          I ain't happy, I'm feeling glad
I got sunshine in a bag
I'm useless but not for long

The set /Location used in the video is a graveyard that emerges from the initial blank background, this also reflects the lyrics further (assuming that what is in the bag is a drug e.g. weed, after taking the drug the world around him/her is transformed in a negative way).

There was no make-up present because it was animation.

The colour used ranged from light blue to dark grey, very gritty down to earth colours that reflect the lyrics meaning.

The costume is an interesting one as each member of Gorillaz has an individual personality which is portrayed through their clothing (e.g. Noodle is of an Asian Nationality, thus she is wearing Asian Fashion).

There are no notable props in the video (unless you’d want to include the thriller zombie gorillas as props).

Rap – Cee Lo Green – Fuck You

The lighting used in the video was rather bright/ light, this conveyed to me a story telling tone which reflects the song. Another notable bit of lighting is that whenever modern Cee Lo appears on screen he is shown in a blue light thus conveying that he is separate as to what else is on screen at that moment.

The set used in the video was the diner; it was utilized well as it showed a consistent repeat of history whilst keeping it simple and enjoyable.

I can only assume that the make-up used in this video would have been to make Cee Lo’s crushes look more appealing, and of course to make his back-up singers look attractive as well.

Distinctive costumes are primarily used on Cee Lo (all ages) and his back-up singers as to not divert the audiences attention and to make themselves more attractive, also the background characters costumes reflected which part of Cee Lo’s timeline you were currently in.

Props that were used in the video fit the purpose of Cee Lo’s timeline and the lyrics, e.g. at the beginning of the video when young Cee Lo is trying to win the affections of a girl through his toy truck his bested by a toy Ferrari – reflecting the lyric “can’t afford a Ferrari”.

Spoken & Audio – The Lonely Island – BoomBox

The lighting was nice and bright throughout most of the video (in other parts the star would be well lit in front of a black background).

Multiple sets and locations were used in the video as to literally illustrate the lyrics e.g. Imagine in your mind a posh country club
The stuffy old money where the poor kid's snubbed

Make-up was most likely used to make Andy Samberg/ Julian Casablancas look more bright than other characters to make them stand out more (however there may not even be any make-up present as I’m not exactly sure what I’m looking for other than the obvious eye shadow/ blush on females).

The colour used throughout the video was a dark realistic colour, so to make the audience assume that the video is taking place in real life (minimal cinematic qualities are present here unlike other music video’s that would have)

Costume is comedicly exaggerated on the stars to make them look really out of the ordinary and rebellious (it also makes them easy to spot out in a crowd), other costumes include set appropriate costumes for background characters.

Notable props include:

-          Boiled Goose, this is a recurring joke in the video as it fits in so well with how Samberg is saying the lyrics that it can be used as an actual lyric/ visual lyric.

-          BoomBox, despite being the title of the song, the BoomBox is still a significant prop as whenever it is used in screen it distorts what western society would call normal/ typical, thus is the bases for the song.
