Dyer's Theory
Pop performer and pop star are different things. Stars image have become a recognised sign that is used in many different media forms.
Stars can use the fact that their image has meaning by allowing it to be used for advertising purposes.
1. Stars are constructed
Artificial images with a USP (unique selling point) that can be copied and or parodied. e.g Bonos glasses, Britney's stomach. madonas pointy bra.
"A star is an image not a real person that is constructed (as any other aspect of fiction is) out of a range of materials."
2. Stars are made to appeal to audiences, which will in turn generate revenue for record companies. Record companies nurture and shape their stars. They manufacture what they think audiences want.
"Stars are commodities produced and consumed on the strength of their meanings".
3.Ideology and culture
Stars represent shared cultural values and attitudes and will promote a certain ideology. Audiences interest in these values enhance star quality.
4.Character and personalities
A star begins as a 'real' human but the star transformation process turns them in to a construct. Stars persona can be continually re-read and reassessed. Second album syndrome is where the star is unable to maintain there persona over a period of time. e.g Madonna is constantly adapting and changing to keep fans interested.
5. Star image motif's
running theme to establish the artists as a brean e.g Red Hot Chilli Peppers star and Lilly Allen changed her style as she matured.
